Shopify e-commerce development

Shopify Website Design & Development

Shopify stores built to actually sell. I design and build professional Shopify stores for businesses that need more than a pretty template.

Overview

More than just installing a Shopify theme

Whether you are launching a completely new online shop, rebuilding an existing Shopify store or moving from WooCommerce, Wix or another platform, I can handle the entire project — design, products, collections, navigation, apps, payments, shipping, SEO, integrations and launch.

The result is a Shopify store that looks right, works properly and is straightforward for you to manage once it is live.

Anyone can install a Shopify theme. Building an online shop that looks professional, makes sense to customers, works properly on mobile and gives search engines the right information is a different job entirely.

I build Shopify stores around the business rather than trying to force the business into a generic template. That means thinking about how products should be organised, how customers find what they need, how collections connect, what information belongs on product pages, which apps are actually necessary and how the entire store works from first visit through to checkout.

I can take care of the whole build, from the initial structure and visual design through to products, payments, shipping, apps, SEO, analytics and launch. If you have already got an online shop that has become slow, messy or difficult to manage, I can rebuild or migrate that too.

I work with businesses across the United Kingdom, and I take remote projects further afield when the job suits.

Everything needed to build a proper Shopify store

Every project is different, so I do not force businesses into an identical package. I build around what the store actually needs.

Complete Shopify builds

Starting from scratch? I can build your Shopify store from the ground up, including the storefront design, products, collections, navigation, payment configuration, shipping, essential apps, technical setup and launch. The aim is to give you a professional e-commerce website without leaving you with a complicated system that requires a developer every time you want to change something.

Shopify redesigns

Already using Shopify but not happy with the website? I can redesign and restructure an existing Shopify store without unnecessarily starting the entire business again. That can include the homepage, product pages, collections, navigation, mobile experience, apps, conversion elements and overall visual direction.

WooCommerce to Shopify migration

If WordPress and WooCommerce have become difficult to maintain, I can migrate the store to Shopify. Depending on the existing setup, this can include products, customers, historic orders, categories, content, blogs, imagery, metadata and redirects. A migration is not just about copying information from one system to another. The new store needs to be structured correctly, and important existing URLs and SEO need to be considered before anything moves.

Wix to Shopify migration

Wix is perfectly capable for many business websites, but if a business becomes heavily focused on e-commerce, Shopify can make more sense. I can move an existing Wix website or Wix store onto Shopify, rebuild the storefront and organise the e-commerce side properly.

Shopify SEO

SEO should not be something that gets added after the website has been built. I consider search structure while building the store, including product and collection architecture, page titles, meta descriptions, internal linking, image optimisation, redirects, structured data and technical elements. For existing Shopify stores, I can also review and improve the current SEO setup.

Shopify app integration

Shopify has thousands of apps. That does not mean your store needs thousands of apps. I will identify and configure the functionality the business actually needs without unnecessarily bloating the store. This can include reviews, subscriptions, bundles, upsells, wholesale functionality, customer accounts, loyalty programmes, advanced filtering, affiliate systems and marketing integrations.

Email marketing and Klaviyo

Where required, I can connect Shopify with Klaviyo and other marketing systems so customer and order data flows into the marketing platform correctly. This can form the foundation for abandoned checkout emails, welcome sequences, post-purchase journeys, customer segmentation and other automated marketing.

Affiliate and ambassador programmes

If you want affiliates, creators or ambassadors promoting your products, I can configure an appropriate Shopify affiliate system. That can include branded registration pages, commission structures, referral links, discount codes and the customer-facing parts of the programme.

Conversion improvements

Sometimes the platform is not the problem. The store just needs improving.

  • Product pages
  • Navigation and collection structure
  • Calls to action and trust elements
  • Mobile layouts and the cart
  • Cross-selling, upselling and recommendations
  • Landing pages and customer journeys

Migration

Moving your existing store to Shopify?

If your current e-commerce website has become slow, difficult to manage or dependent on endless plugins, moving to Shopify can simplify the operation considerably.

I can handle the migration rather than leaving you to manually recreate everything. The goal is not simply to copy the old website. It is to work out what should be retained, what should be improved and how the business should be structured properly inside Shopify.

Before launch, existing URLs and search visibility should be reviewed so valuable pages are not unnecessarily lost when the new store goes live.

Scope

A complete Shopify build can include

Depending on the project. The exact scope is agreed before the work begins. Not every store needs every feature, and I will not recommend adding functionality simply for the sake of it.

  • Bespoke storefront design
  • Theme customisation
  • Mobile layout
  • Homepage, product and collection templates
  • Navigation and mega menus
  • Search and filtering

Catalogue and content

  • Customer migration
  • Historic orders where that is technically possible
  • Blog, article and page migration

Payments, shipping and launch

  • Payment and shipping configuration
  • Domain configuration
  • Policies and essential store pages
  • Contact forms
  • Testing and launch support

Search and marketing

  • Product and collection SEO
  • Metadata and structured data
  • URL redirects
  • Analytics and Google integrations
  • Email platform integration
  • App setup, reviews and affiliate programmes
  • Cross-selling and upselling

Why Shopify

Why I use Shopify for e-commerce

Designed around selling

I can build websites on different platforms, including Wix, but when the main purpose of the website is selling products online, Shopify is usually where I want to build it. Products, customers, orders, payments, discounts, inventory and fulfilment sit in the same system.

Room to grow

The app infrastructure means extra functionality can be introduced as the business grows. I still keep the app list short. A store does not get better because it has more plugins.

You can run it afterwards

A business owner should not need to contact a developer every time they want to change a homepage banner, add a product, create a collection or run a promotion. I build Shopify stores so they are capable behind the scenes and straightforward for the people actually running the business.

Wix or Shopify

The right platform depends on what you are building.

I do not believe every website should be built on the same platform.

Wix websites

For service businesses, brochure websites, portfolios, landing pages and other content-led projects, Wix can be an excellent fit. I can design and build complete Wix websites that are professional, responsive and easy for the business owner to update.

Discuss a Wix Website

Shopify e-commerce

If the website's primary job is selling products, managing orders and growing an e-commerce business, Shopify is my preferred platform. I can build the entire store, migrate an existing business or improve a Shopify site that is already running.

Discuss a Shopify Store

Already have Shopify? You might not need a new website.

If your Shopify store is already trading, rebuilding everything is not automatically the right answer. Sometimes a focused redesign or technical improvement makes more sense. I can work on the homepage, product pages, collections, navigation, mobile usability, SEO, conversion, apps, affiliate systems, email integrations, site structure and unnecessary app usage.

Process

From idea to live store

Strategy, structure, design, development, products, migration, integrations, SEO, testing and launch.

Discovery

What are you selling? Who are you selling it to? What already exists? What is working? What is annoying you? And what does the new store actually need to achieve?

Structure

Before colours and banners, I work out the store structure. Products, collections, navigation, pages, customer journeys and SEO architecture all need to make sense.

Design

The storefront is designed around the brand. The objective is not to make it look like every other Shopify template. It needs to feel like your business.

Development

I configure Shopify, customise the theme and build the functionality required for the project.

Products and content

Products, collections, imagery and content can be created, imported or migrated from the existing website.

SEO and technical setup

Titles, descriptions, redirects, structured data, analytics and other technical elements are configured before launch.

Testing

The store is tested across desktop, tablet and mobile, along with checkout, forms, navigation, links and important functionality.

Launch

Once everything has been checked, the domain is connected and the new Shopify store goes live.

Fit

Shopify development for growing businesses

Typical projects

  • New product brands launching a first proper online shop
  • Established retailers and small or medium-sized businesses
  • Businesses moving from physical retail into e-commerce
  • WooCommerce stores migrating to Shopify
  • Wix stores that have outgrown the current setup
  • Existing Shopify businesses that need a redesign
  • Brands that need affiliate or ambassador functionality
  • Businesses that need Shopify SEO improvements

Shopify SEO

Build the SEO into the store from the beginning

Moving platforms or rebuilding an e-commerce website without considering SEO can create unnecessary problems. Existing pages may already have rankings, backlinks or search history. Changing URLs without redirects, removing useful content or restructuring collections carelessly can lose some of that value.

Store architecture

Logical relationships between products, collections, informational pages and articles.

Product and collection optimisation

Page titles, descriptions, headings, copy and internal linking.

Technical SEO

Canonicals, redirects, indexability, sitemap behaviour and other technical elements.

Structured data

Appropriate schema, without conflicting duplicate markup.

Content and internal linking

Articles, buying guides, collections and products connected so customers and search engines can see how the site fits together.

Migration protection

Important old URLs mapped to their new Shopify equivalents, with redirects where they are needed.

FAQ

Shopify website design FAQs

How much does a Shopify website cost?

There is not one sensible fixed price for every Shopify project. A small store with a straightforward product catalogue is very different from an established e-commerce business requiring hundreds of products, customer migration, historic orders, specialist apps, integrations and a complete SEO migration. Tell me what you are building and I will work out what is actually required before quoting the project.

Can you migrate WooCommerce to Shopify?

Yes. I can assess and migrate products, customers, orders, content, blogs, imagery and other relevant data depending on the existing setup. I also review URLs, redirects and SEO rather than treating the migration as nothing more than a data transfer.

Can you migrate Wix to Shopify?

Yes. If you started with Wix but the business has become increasingly focused on e-commerce, I can rebuild the store in Shopify and migrate the relevant products and content.

Can you redesign my existing Shopify store?

Yes. You do not need to abandon an existing Shopify account just because the storefront needs work. I can redesign the existing store, improve individual templates or concentrate on specific problems.

Can you add all of my products?

Yes. Product creation or migration can be included within the project. For larger catalogues, I will determine the most efficient way to import and organise the data rather than manually recreating products unnecessarily.

Can you configure payments and shipping?

Yes. Payment and shipping configuration can be handled as part of the Shopify build.

Do you do Shopify SEO?

Yes. SEO can be incorporated into new builds, migrations and existing-store improvement projects. This can include site structure, metadata, product and collection optimisation, redirects, internal linking and structured data.

Can you connect Klaviyo to Shopify?

Yes. Klaviyo and other suitable marketing platforms can be connected and configured as part of the wider project where required.

Can you create an affiliate programme?

Yes. I can configure affiliate or ambassador functionality using suitable Shopify apps and integrate the programme into the customer-facing website.

Do you still build Wix websites?

Yes. I still build Wix websites and it is a good option for many service businesses, portfolios, brochure websites and content-led projects. For businesses primarily focused on selling products online, I generally recommend Shopify.

Can I manage the Shopify website myself afterwards?

Yes, and that is important. Normal tasks such as adding products, changing content, creating collections and running promotions should not require a developer every time. I will build the store with ongoing day-to-day management in mind.

Planning a Shopify store?

Whether you are launching a completely new e-commerce business, rebuilding an existing Shopify store or moving away from WooCommerce or Wix, tell me what you are trying to achieve. I will look at the project, work out what you actually need and recommend the most sensible way to build it.
